Biography[edit]

Daniel C. Payne was the brother of John Payne (1797-1869), both recent immigrants from England and stone cutters.

Movements on Sunday, 25 July[edit]

  • 10 am: while shaving in his room, Mary knocked at his door and told him she was going to Mrs. Downing's, he advised he would meet her on return, as they had done previously, at about dark at the corner of Broadway and Ann Streets.
  • 11 am: walked to brother John Payne's at 33 Warren St. Stayed with him until 1 pm. During this time they had gone together to Scott's Bazaar, on Dey St, until 1pm. Then they walked up Broadway and parted company near St. Paul's Church.
  • 1 pm: From St. Paul's church he walked up into James St to Mr. Brickford's and read the newspapers for an hour.
  • 2 pm: Came down and took his dinner at Goslin's eating house on Fulton St. Afterwards went home.
  • 3 pm: Laid in bed at home until 6 pm
  • 6 pm: Dressed and walked down to the Battery until 7:15
  • 7:15 pm: Leaving the Battery, he met his brother coming off the Battery with his children. They spoke for a moment and parted. Daniel continued up Broadway and, when nearing Ann St, noticed the storm coming in fast. He thought it was to early to go to bed, so he went to Bickford's again, on James St, until 9pm.
  • 9 pm: Went home and retired for the night.
