MONTICELLO, NY, Dec 12 - Mrs. Lizzie Halliday made another attempt to take her life. Deputy Sheriff John Beecher found her sitting on the iron bed in one corner of her cell covered with blood, which was flowing from a deep gash on the left side of her throat and a smaller one on the right side. She had inflicted the wounds with a piece of sharp edge glass which she had broken from a pane in the cell window. With the sharp corners of the glass and her finger nails she had scraped her neck beneath her chin and then proceeded to gash it.
Dr. Cauthers found that she had not only cut her throat, but had cut, hacked and otherwise mutilated herself in a terrible manner. The joints of her arms at the elbows were gashed nearly to the bone, and a number of other cuts were upon them. When asked by the doctor why she had injured herself, she said: “I thought I would cut myself to see if I would bleed.”
The doctor, when asked if her case was serious, replied that she was very weak from the loss of blood, but with proper care would probably be all right in a few weeks. It is thought that the cause for her attempts to commit suicide was that she thought she was to be tried at the term of court now in session, not knowing that her trial had been carried over to the May term. She was put in handcuffs to prevent any further attempts on her life.
