Bio[edit]
Walter was the 9th child, and 3rd son, of the Mailahn family. For the majority of his young life, during his early years of memory, he lost his mother and several sisters one after another. Then, when he was 14, his elder brother killed their father, youngest brother and last surviving sister before taking his own life. His remaining older brother died two years later of tuberculosis. Walter would eventually move to Brillion, Wisconsin and learned a trade as an electrician. He stayed then until at least 1920 but eventually moved further west, ending up in Salem, Oregon. In Nov of 1932 he died at the Oregon State Hospital where they specialized in tuberculosis. His ashes are still at the State Hospital as of this writing (Apr 2024), having never been claimed.
